Q: What is MSConfig? How does MSConfig Work?
A: MSConfig is the System Configuration Utility, and it
helps you troubleshoot everything having to do with what is
loaded when you boot your computer. This includes:
- The System.ini file
- The Win.ini file
- The Boot.ini file
- Programs that are set to load during the startup
process (these programs are specified in the Startup folder
and in the registry)
For more detailed information on how to use MSConfig to
troubleshoot startup issues, check out this Microsoft KB article. But keep
reading for a great alternative to MSConfig...
Q: Is it ok to go into
MSconfig/startup and disable everything? I did it on my system
and it seems faster, but maybe my AVG etc. is not
on?
A: No, you should not disable everything in
MSConfig, as you will almost certainly be turning off some
progams that you DO want (such as your anti-virus, as you
alluded to) along with a few that you might want. If you
suspect you have some undesired startup items, you should
research what all is getting loaded and turn off just the ones
that you don't want.
This is a good time to plug an excellent
program called WinPatrol. I call WinPatrol
"MSConfig on Steroids". Once installed, "Scotty the
Watchdog" will keep a close eye on your system and let you
know anytime a new startup item is installed. For more
on WinPatrol, see this
item in the Software FAQ.
