The Best Free DNS Hosting -
EveryDNS!by Rich Pryor
Why Run Your Own DNS Server? EveryDNS
is Free and it Rocks!
Are you a system administrator running DNS servers for your
organization? If so, you're going to love today's tip. I used
to host DNS for nearly 50 domains. Then one day while I was out
of town, a glitch caused both of my nameservers to become
unreachable. Suddenly, websites were unreachable and email was
down for almost 50 domains. I was able to get back to town and
fix the problem within 4-5 hours, but it was an unfortunate
service outage for my clients. I remember walking out of the
data center that day asking myself "what if I had been on
vacation?"
EveryDNS to the rescue! This
service is almost too good to be true, but I've been using them
for over six months now and I love it. Over 155,000 hosting
nearly a quarter million domains agree! And best of all, the
service is FREE, although they ask you to donate to help defray
costs (and if you have more than 20 domains they require
it.)
To clarify, EveryDNS can host DNS
for your Internet domain, but you still need to run Windows DNS
if you are running a Windows Server network with Active
Directory. (But you should be using a .local domain for that
anyway. EveryDNS works with .com, .net, .org, .info, .us,
etc...)
To use EveryDNS, just go
to the EveryDNS website and set up an
account. Add your domains and configure DNS (using the handy
tutorials). Once everything is set ok, go to your domain
registrars' website and edit your domain configuration.
Change your name servers to ns1.everydns.net,
ns2.everydns.net, ns3.everydns.net, and ns4.everydns.net. In
short order, your DNS hosting is handled by EveryDNS servers
in San Diego, San Jose, the Netherlands, and Washington
D.C.!
That's one less thing to worry
about while you're on the beach sipping that Pina Colada!
