Q: Should I Be Concerned About the Conficker Worm?

Bookmark and Share

A:  Sure, it is always good to be concerned.  Here is everything you need to know about Conficker and other malicious worms.

First, a quick and easy way to determine if you are infected by Conficker is to check your status on the Conficker Eye Chart.  If you see all six images, you are most likely not infected.

Second, if you are infected, download and run the latest version of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool. Microsoft updates this tool often, and it will squash Conficker (and other nasty malware).

Third, keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware software updated, and make sure you run manual scans at least weekly if you don't have automated versions.

Fourth, don't forget about OpenDNS, which will block Conficker from "calling the mothership", even if you are infected.

Finally, always remember to keep your system up to date with the latest Microsoft Critical Updates! Most malware (including Conficker) exploits well-known and long-since-patched vulnerabilities in Windows.  Go to WindowsUpdate.com if you are unsure whether you have the latest updates.
