Q: My Normal.DOT file has been changed.  Should I save the changes?  Bookmark and Share

A: Probably not.  Unless you were changing it on purpose, which is unlikely or you would not be asking this question.  To play it safe, follow these steps:

  1. Close all Microsoft Office Apps - Outlook, Excel, and especially Word.
  2. Double-click My Computer.
  3. Tools->Folder Options->View Tab - make sure “Show Hidden Files and Folders” is checked.  Click Ok.
  4. Open up c:\documents and settings\<profile name>\application data\microsoft\templates
  5. Find the file “Normal.DOT” and click once to Highlight it.  Now hit <F2> to rename and make it “Normal.bak”
  6. Close all the windows and launch Word, and a new Normal.Dot file will be created.
