Q: What is the Best Anti-Virus
Software?
A: For several years now, I have been using and
recommending AVG Anti-Virus.
I really, really like AVG, and so do lots of other IT
professionals I know. But don't take my word for
it. The very prestigious TechWorld awards just gave AVG
Internet Security the award of Best Security Software Product
of the Year for 2007. (TechWorld is a leading independent IT
news publisher which targets network managers. The TechWorld
Awards recognize and reward the very highest standards of
achievement. With over 200 entries each year, they are
considered a benchmark throughout the computer industry.)
I like AVG Anti-Virus because
it is super-easy to install, and once installed you just tell
it how many times a day to download updates and what time
of day do you want it to schedule your scan (I pick 2am). After
that, it just runs, silently in the background, doing its
thing. Other products are CONSTANTLY throwing up cryptic
boxes with messages which just confuse end users. AVG
does what it is supposed to do, and it does it well.
If you are a personal home user and do not use your computer
for any commercial purposes, you can use the free version of AVG, or for enhanced
protection and features, get the more advanced AVG Professional or AVG Internet
Security. (Note: If you do purchase AVG Internet
Security, I recommend leaving the AVG Firewall inactive and
using either the built-in Windows firewall or Comodo
firewall instead. The AVG Firewall is a little too
complex for most users to manage.)
Do you have an anti-virus program that
you love? Let me know!
